Description

A rich and elegant wine from La Rioja

The estate

The bodega Artadi was founded in 1985 by winemakers from localities around Logroño with the ambition to produce great Rioja wines, a wine-growing area located in the north of Spain.

Under the direction of the visionary oenologist Juan Carlos López de Lacalle since 1992, the bodega quickly gained international renown. The quality of its wines is recognised by many critics, including Robert Parker, who has awarded several cuvées the much-coveted score of 100/100.

The vineyard

The Artadi bodega oversees an 80-hectare vineyard located in Laguardia, in the Rioja Alavesa region. Situated at 630 metres above sea level and composed of old tempranillos yielding low but very qualitative yields, this Spanish vineyard is managed using organic and biodynamic agriculture.

The wine

Trempanillo Quintanilla 2022 from Artadi is a La Rioja wine made from a vineyard covering an area of 1.99 hectares, majestically stretching to an altitude of 585 metres in the picturesque locality of Elvillar.

Planted in 1951, this vineyard is located on the flat top of a hill, thus offering a unique panorama. Its soil is unique: it is a poor, shallow loamy soil, but rich in limestone. These characteristics, combined with water stress conditions and a thin layer of soil, limit the vegetative vigour of the vine. This natural constraint allows for a more moderate vegetative and productive balance. The result is a wine that stands out for its deep verticality and tension, qualities sought after by wine connoisseurs.

Respect for nature is at the heart of the estate's viticultural practices. No pesticides or herbicides are used, thus ensuring a healthy environment for the vines and a quality production. Organic viticulture is favoured, demonstrating a deep commitment to a sustainable and respectful agricultural approach.

The vintage

A mild and particularly rainy winter gives way to a more clement spring, promoting homogeneous budding. Warm temperatures recorded from mid-May precede a very hot summer. The harvest begins on 15 September in a very healthy vineyard.

 Vinification and ageing

Manual harvesting followed by a rigorous sorting, thus ensuring optimal quality. Vinification in open wooden vats, followed by cold maceration to best extract the aromas and colours. Fermentation for 10-12 days with two punch-downs per day and a light pumping over. Malolactic fermentation in barrels to develop the complexity of the wine. Ageing for 10 months in French oak barrels before an additional 6 months of ageing in foudres.

Blend

Quintanilla 2022 from Artadi is a 100% tempranillo.
