Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2007 from Blandy's
Tasting
Appearance
This Malmsey Colheita 2007 reveals an amber hue with golden highlights and a crystalline brilliance, a testament to its long oxidative ageing.
Nose
The bouquet is instantly recognisable, with notes of jam and marmalade, candied fruit and dried fruit such as walnuts and hazelnuts, the hallmark of the great Malmseys of Madeira.
Palate
The attack is rich and enveloping, both sweet and surprisingly fresh. The long finish reveals woody notes and dried fruit that seem to have been macerated in eau-de-vie, extending the tasting experience most pleasantly.
Food and wine pairing
This sweet Madeira will pair beautifully with dried fruit and candied orange cakes, as well as chocolate desserts, whose bitterness balances its sugary generosity.
Serving and cellaring
We recommend decanting this Malmsey Colheita Single Harvest 2007 to remove any sediment that may have formed in the bottle over time. Store it upright, away from light, in a cool, dry place at a constant temperature, ideally below 16°C.
A Historic House Devoted to Centuries-Old Portuguese Expertise
The estate
Founded in 1811 in Funchal by John Blandy, Blandy's is the only founding dynasty of the Madeira wine trade to have retained ownership and management of its original company two centuries later. Today, the Blandy's brand is part of the Madeira Wine Company, in which the Blandy family holds the majority stake. Based on the island of Madeira, between Funchal and the north coast, it cultivates several hectares of vines and remains faithful to traditional expertise handed down over seven generations.
The vineyard
The Malvasia used for this Malmsey comes mainly from the São Jorge area on the north coast of Madeira, where the vines are trained on trellises or pergolas and grow in volcanic soils derived from basalt, trachyte, tuff and conglomerate. This Portuguese terroir, with its temperate oceanic climate, offers particularly favourable conditions for the expression of the Malvasia grape, grown here by a network of local winegrowers.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand, with a quality selection carried out over several passes according to their ripeness. This Madeira wine is then aged using the traditional Canteiro system, in 650-litre casks at ambient temperature, until it was bottled in 2022 under the supervision of cellar master Francisco Albuquerque.
Grape variety
This Terras Madeirenses wine is made from 100% Malvasia (Malmsey).
