A Brunello di Montalcino combining elegance and power
The property
Founded in 1978 by Italian-American brothers John and Harry Mariani, Castello Banfi is an emblematic estate of Montalcino, in Tuscany. Dominated by a 15th-century medieval castle, perched on a hill between Siena and Mount Amiata, it combines tradition and modernity. Under the direction of Enrico Viglierchio, the estate stands out for its innovative and sustainable viticultural practices, perfectly adapted to the cultivation of Sangiovese on clay-limestone soils, giving the wines great finesse and beautiful complexity.
The vineyard
The Brunello di Montalcino comes from vineyards located on the hills of the estate, with a low to moderate slope. The soils develop on different types of sediments, from marine Pliocene clayey sands to deep soils rich in limestone stones, up to moderately deep blue-gray clays that retain moisture.
The vintage
Mild temperatures and low rainfall during the winter and spring favored the early development of the vines. June experienced several rainy episodes accompanied by mild temperatures, allowing for optimal vegetative balance. The other summer months were hot and sunny, allowing for perfect veraison and maturation of the grapes.
Vinification and aging
The Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is vinified in French oak and stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature (25-30°C). The aging is done 80% in French oak barrels (90-60 hl) and 20% in French barriques (350 l) for at least 2 years.
