Description
The balance and finesse of a Pomerol red wine
The property
Located within the Pomerol appellation, the Château Beauregard finds its origins in the 12th century and the Knights Hospitaller, who are credited with the famous Templar Cross, which has become the emblem of the property, and who cultivated the lands of the Manor they owned at the time.
Although it was not until the 18th century that the first vineyards were planted at Château Beauregard, its successive owners have developed its quality over the vintages to be recognized as one of the best wines of Pomerol.
The property is writing a new page in its history following its acquisition in 2014 by the Moulin and Cathiard families with the ambition, through significant renovation work on the winemaking facilities, to magnify the wines of this reference from the right bank of Bordeaux.
The vineyard
Château Beauregard oversees a 17.5-hectare vineyard certified Organic Agriculture. Averaging 30 years old, the vines are planted on a clay-gravel soil on the southeast edge of the famous Pomerol plateau.
The vintage
The winter was mild and rainy, as was the spring, whose conditions favored a very early bud break at the end of March. Some episodes of coolness combined with heavy rainfall led to high mildew pressure. Just as early, the flowering that began on May 11 is homogeneous. While the month of June is relatively cool, the conditions from July are hot and dry until the stormy episodes in mid-August, which were beneficial for the vineyard. These significant climatic contrasts induced significant water stress, particularly for the young vines. The high temperatures in September accelerated the start of the harvest.
Vinification and aging
The grapes are manually sorted before destemming, followed by an optical sort. The berries are placed in cold rooms to lower the temperature to 6°C. Parcel vinification with gravity-fed vatting in 22 thermoregulated truncated concrete vats. Alcoholic fermentation between 26 and 30 degrees followed by a maceration of 3 to 4 weeks. Malolactic fermentation is carried out in new barrels for the best vats. The aging lasts 18 months (45% new barrels). A selection of juice is aged in amphorae.
Blend
This Château Beauregard 2020 is a blend of merlot (70%) and cabernet franc (30%).
