Description

A fresh and expressive red wine from Saint-Estèphe

The estate

Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport wood from one bank to the other of the Garonne. And at the beginning of the 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate as a wedding gift, added his name to it, thus creating the label of this 3rd grand cru classé from Saint-Estèphe.

The Château Calon Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century, until 2012, when the estate was bought by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce wines with an inimitable style marked by the seal of the appellation.

Château Calon Ségur has also become famous with its label adorning the bottles of the estate. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the symbol of the estate and pays tribute to this phrase of the Marquis de Ségur: "I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon". For nearly three centuries, lovers of Château Calon Ségur have continued to remain loyal to this iconic estate of the appellation.

The vineyard

The Château Calon Ségur 2023 comes from a vineyard covering an area of 55 hectares, 48 hectares of which are in production. Planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravels dating from the Quaternary period with a thin layer of lacustrine clay on top, the 20-year-old vines on average give birth to a great Saint-Estèphe wine.

Vinification and ageing

Manual harvest before a first control of the grape on the vine. Vibrating destemmer and manual sorting table. Vinification in thermo-regulated stainless steel truncated vats. Maceration for 18 to 21 days. Micro-oxygenation. Co-inoculation with exogenous yeasts and bacteria in stainless steel vats. The ageing lasts 20 months in new barrels.

Blend

This Château Calon Ségur 2023 is the result of a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (72%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (12%), and Petit Verdot (1%).
