Description

The richness and balance of a Pessac-Léognan white wine

The estate

At the end of the 17th century, the Château Couhins-Lurton emerges from history and peacefully traverses the centuries thanks to the good care of the Blanchereau family. In 1959, the estate is recognized for the quality of its white wines and enters the INAO classification of Crus Classés de Graves. However, the quantity of red wines produced is lesser. When in 1967 André Lurton hears of a vine uprooting project on the castle's lands, he does not hesitate to rent the concerned parcels of the estate and in 1992, he manages to acquire the entirety of the estate. He then undertakes the ambitious project of restoring the castle's nobility by highlighting ancestral red grape varieties such as merlot or cabernet sauvignon.

The vineyard

Château Couhins-Lurton is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a 21-hectare vineyard, 4.9 of which are dedicated to white wine. Located in Villenave-d'Ornon, the estate benefits from an exceptional terroir in the heart of the Graves and an oceanic climate characterized by its mildness. The Château Couhins-Lurton white 2022 comes from vines that are 28 years old on average, covering a gentle slope descending towards a tributary of the Garonne. The soils are composed of sands, gravels and limestones which notably allow the sauvignon blanc to reveal its most beautiful aromatic expression. The estate is certified High Environmental Value level 3.

The vintage

The frost episode in early April had a slight impact on the vineyard. The rainfall on August 15th allowed for an acceleration of the veraison and optimal ripening of the grapes. Despite a decrease in yields, which are still higher than those of 2021, the grapes are of high quality.

Vinification and aging

After the harvest from August 25 to September 8, the alcoholic fermentation is carried out in barrels following pressing and settling. Aging for 15 months, including 12 months in barrels, accompanied by regular stirring.
