Description

A Gourmet and Structured Classified Growth of Margaux

The property

3rd Classified Growth of Margaux in the 1855 classification of Médoc wines, the Château Kirwan has belonged to the Schÿler family since 1925. Driven by the dynamism of Philippe Delfaut and equipped with infrastructure that matches its terroir, Château Kirwan belongs to the elite of the great growths of Margaux.

The vineyard

Located on the Cantenac plateau, the vineyard of Château Kirwan extends over 37 hectares of vines within the Margaux appellation. This superb mound of gravel and clay brings together all the favorable conditions for the maturation of the great Médoc grape varieties.

The vintage

If the vine's bud break is early due to high temperatures, the combination of mildness and heavy rainfall in April and May develops significant mildew pressure. The drier conditions of the second half of May favor homogeneous flowering. From June 19 to August 11, no rain is recorded. These very dry conditions have an impact on the vine, especially on the young plants that are watered several times. The veraison takes place in July and not in August as usual. The end of July is marked by drought and significant water stress. A stormy episode in mid-August restarts the maturation of the grapes which, at the time of harvest and despite their reduced size, are rich in phenolic compounds, tannins and color.

Vinification

Low-intervention vinification through gentle extraction and maceration of 15 to 20 days to achieve a perfect balance between freshness, fruity aromas and structure.

Blend

The Château Kirwan 2020 is made from a blend of cabernet sauvignon (51%), cabernet franc (28%), merlot (14%) and petit verdot (7%).
