Description

The style of a Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion by Château La Gaffelière

The property

Located at the southern entrance of the village of Saint-Émilion, the Château La Gaffelière, Premier Grand Cru Classé B of Saint-Émilion, bears witness to very ancient origins. Mosaics discovered during excavations have attested to the presence of the vine on the estate since Gallo-Roman times. Owned by the Malet Roquefort family for over three centuries and located in the "golden triangle" between the hills of the Pavie and Ausone châteaux, Château La Gaffelière embodies the excellence of the great wines of Saint-Émilion.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château La Gaffelière covers 38 hectares, 22 of which are 1st Grands Crus Classés. This vineyard is located on 3 different zones. Thus, we find the famous limestone plateau with asterias of Saint-Émilion, the outcrops of clayey Molasses from Fronsadais or the deep carbonated sands. The vineyard of Château La Gaffelière is managed using sustainable agriculture, favoring the gentlest intervention methods.

The vintage

The mild winter allowed for bud break at the end of March. The flowering took place under good conditions. Particularly hot, the month of July is punctuated by a beneficial stormy episode, avoiding the risk of too much water stress. The harvested grapes are perfectly ripe.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest. Merlot from September 18 to October 8. Cabernet franc from September 30 to October 11. After the harvest, the grapes are placed in a cold room for 12 hours. Optical sorting. Parcel vinification. Parcel vinification in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks filled by gravity and without the use of sulfur. Alcoholic fermentation with pump-overs and punch-downs. Malolactic fermentation in tanks (75%) and barrels (25%). Maceration for 30 days for the merlots and 32 days for the cabernet francs. 15 months of aging in barrels, 60% of which are new.

Blend

Merlot (60%)
Cabernet franc (40%).
