Description
The intensity and refinement of a Pessac-Léognan red wine
The property
Superbly located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the Château Larrivet Haut-Brion shines in the south of Bordeaux. The estate regained its nobility following its acquisition in 1987 by the Gervoson family, who passionately and enthusiastically strive to produce wines of character and great elegance.
The vineyard
From 17 hectares of vines in 1987, this Pessac-Léognan estate has grown to 61 hectares in just a few years following the acquisition of new vineyard plots and new plantings. The vineyard is located on the middle terrace of the Graves de Bordeaux. The soils are therefore heavily gravelly, clayey, and sandy. These hillsides benefit from a superb exposure and are ideally drained.
The vintage
The winter was cold and dry, punctuated by a rainy episode between February and March. April experienced a frost of historic intensity, but the return of spring in May favored both an early and rapid flowering. The summer, on the other hand, was marked by exceptional drought.
Vinification and aging
Parcel vinification in small thermo-regulated concrete vats with gravity filling. Destemming is carried out without crushing. Regular punch-downs accompany long macerations (4 to 5 weeks). The aging is done in thirds: in new French oak barrels, in one-wine barrels, and in two-wine barrels for 14 to 18 months.
Blend
Cabernet sauvignon (65%), cabernet franc (23%), merlot (12%).
Characteristics and tasting advice for Château Larrivet Haut-Brion 2017
Tasting
Color
Deep and clear color, a brilliant dark red.
Nose
The first nose seduces with its intensity, revealing delicate toasted touches of cedar and mocha, subtly wrapped in discreet floral aromas. On aeration, the bouquet gains in precision, revealing an elegant note of violet.
Palate
The attack, soft and velvety, quickly evolves towards flavors of licorice and black fruits. On the palate, the texture is silky, carried by caressing tannins. Smoky nuances, characteristic of the LHB terroir and the predominance of cabernets, are fully expressed. The finish, straight and perfectly balanced, suggests a good aging potential.
