The vivacity and refinement of a Bordeaux white wine signed Pierre Lurton

The property

Built in 1782 on the right bank of Bordeaux and initially owned by wine merchant Bernard Chénier, the Château Marjosse is acquired by the Deleuze family who leases some plots to Pierre Lurton in 1990.

In 1992 Pierre Lurton, who grew up in the neighboring Reynier castle of this magnificent Chartreuse, moves into a second home at Château Marjosse and over the years successively buys several parts of the Deleuze family's property.

In 2000, Pierre Lurton builds an ultra-modern cellar containing more than 40 cement vats and becomes the owner in 2013 of the entire vineyard as well as the Chartreuse.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Marjosse extends over an area of 40 hectares. Located on exceptional clay-limestone soils, this terroir is composed of young and old vines, some of which are centenarian. The vineyard includes different grape varieties, such as merlot, malbec, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon for the Château Marjosse red or semillon, sauvignon blanc, sauvignon gris and muscadelle for the Château Marjosse white.

The vineyard dedicated to the production of Château Marjosse white, a reference among the Bordeaux Dry White wines, is 11 hectares composed of vines aged from 25 to 75 years for the oldest ones.

The vintage

2024 is a year marked by rigorous and constant attention to the vineyard. If the winter mildness leads to an early bud break accompanied by a strong mildew pressure. The spring and summer, alternating sun and heavy rains, have given vigor to the vines after several dry years. The delay in maturity has offered the white grape varieties a beautiful freshness and intense aromas. The harvest, which began on September 14 and ended on the 25th, required constant monitoring of the plots due to a heterogeneity of maturities.

 Vinification and aging

In 2017, Pierre Lurton hires Jean-Marc Domme as technical director. Pierre Lurton initiates for the first time in the history of the estate a separate vinification by plots and the creation of micro-cuvées with limited quantities from the most remarkable plots, in order to express the characteristics and the microclimate of each of them.

Harvested early in the morning to limit oxidation and preserve aromatic richness, the grapes are sorted and gently pressed in pneumatic presses. Protected from oxidation by inerting with carbonic snow, the juices are kept cold on lees for a few days to enhance aromatic expression.

In this search for aromatic purity, the wines are, after settling, fermented at low temperature for 1 to 2 weeks.

The wines are aged on fine lees in concrete tanks for 2 to 3 months. Depending on each batch, regular stirring is carried out twice a week on average. In 2024, 17% of the final blend is aged in 300 to 600 liter barrels to develop complexity and roundness.

Blend
