Description

The refinement and aromatic richness of a Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion

The property

The major peculiarity of Clos Fourtet, this Premier Grand Cru Classé from Saint-Émilion, is to be qualified as a clos. In a constant search for excellence, Clos Fourtet and the Cuvelier family practice sustainable agriculture, mindful of respecting natural balances.

The vineyard

Clos Fourtet watches over a 20-hectare vineyard. The vines, averaging 25 years old, are planted on clay-limestone soils typical of Saint-Émilion.

The vintage

The mild and particularly wet winter promotes the accumulation of beneficial water reserves for soils impoverished by the 2019 drought. Early, bud break begins 10 days ahead of schedule. The warm and wet spring promotes rapid vine development. Dry and cool weather from the end of May limits water stress. Veraison begins in mid-July. Summer conditions are warmer than average. The first half of September is marked by alternating warm days and cool nights, conditions favorable for the development of a beautiful aromatic expression.

Vinification and aging

Fermentation of whole berries. Reception of the harvest in 25 small volume thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks. Extraction by manual punching down. Maceration from 22 to 30 days. Malolactic fermentation in tanks, jars, and barrels. The aging lasts 14 to 18 months in the property's underground cellar, in French oak barrels (50% new, 48% of one wine) and in jar (2%).

Blend

Clos Fourtet 2020 is a blend of merlot (90%), cabernet sauvignon (7%), cabernet franc (3%).
