Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Carignan 1903 2022 from Domaine Le Roc Des Anges
Tasting notes
Colour
The Carignan 1903 2022 displays a deep, brilliant and dense ruby colour with garnet nuances, revealing the natural concentration that comes from its century-old vines.
Nose
The nose is intense and complex, blending red and black fruits such as cherry and blackberry with touches of graphite and well-integrated white pepper. Delicate floral notes and a smoky minerality complete the bouquet, lifted by subtle hints of Mediterranean herbs.
Palate
The attack is precise, carried by a silky, streamlined texture. Fine, elegant tannins give structure to a wine that is both savoury and fresh, vibrant, juicy and saline. The long finish echoes notes of red fruits, Mediterranean herbs and warm stone, in a beautiful balance between depth and freshness.
Food and wine pairing
This wine is an ideal match for raw or lightly cooked red meats, such as beef tartare, as well as fine white meats served with mushrooms, like veal chop with girolles. It also pairs very well with feathered game and refined game dishes, such as hare à la royale.
Serving and cellaring
We recommend serving the Carignan 1903 2022 at a temperature between 15 and 17°C, ideally after decanting so that the wine can express itself fully. It can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve until around 2032.
A century-old Carignan from Roussillon with distinctive freshness and precision
The estate
Domaine Le Roc des Anges was founded in 2001 by Marjorie Gallet in Montner, in Roussillon, and was joined by Stéphane Gallet in 2008. Farmed organically and then biodynamically, the estate has made a name for itself thanks to its old Carignan and Grenache vines planted on schist terroirs. Today, Thibault Ponthier, trained at renowned Burgundy estates, has taken over the estate after a transition period with the founders and oversees its management, upholding the commitment to freshness and precision that has made its reputation.
The vineyard
The Carignan 1903 comes from century-old vines planted in 1903, located on the northern slope of Força Réal, in the village of Montner. The soils are made up of ancient schist formed from the compression of pure clays, rich in silica, which force the roots to dig deep to draw up freshness and minerality. This cuvée is produced under the IGP Côtes Catalanes, with extremely low yields.
Winemaking and ageing
For the Carignan 1903 2022, fermentation takes place in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts, using whole berries and whole bunches, with a maceration period of 10 to 15 days. Ageing then continues mainly in large oak foudres for around 9 months, before bottling without fining or filtration.
Grape variety
This cuvée is made from Carignan, sourced from century-old vines planted in 1903.
