The estate

Since the 17th century, the Domäne Wachau has benefited from an exceptional terroir along the Danube. When Roman Horvath MW and Heinz Frischengruber took over the reins of the estate in 2004, they undertook to make tradition and innovation rhyme there. And the bet is successful because, since then, Domäne Wachau has established itself as one of the best estates in Austria. In 2020, thanks to a handcrafted vineyard work respectful of nature, and the ancestral know-how of its group of winegrowers, Domäne Wachau was elected the third best wine estate in the world by the World’s Best Vineyards. The variety and exceptional quality of these great Austrian wines, as well as the precision of their origin, have established the prestige of the estate, an excellence hailed by the American expert Robert Parker.

The vineyard

Thanks to its exceptional terroir, Singerriedel has managed to rise among the most prestigious estates of the Wachau, emblematic Austrian appellation. This plot benefits from both a very mild climate and an absolutely exceptional geology. Its south-facing exposure allows it to keep the warmth of the beautiful days until late in the evening. Its soil, dominated by quartz, typical of the region, is covered by a thin layer of earth very rich in silicate which gives the wines of Singerriedel an incomparable minerality. Like the other plots of the wine estate, the vineyard benefits from the harmonious balance between a deep respect for nature and an ancestral know-how embodied by the families of winegrowers who take care of it.

The wine

The prestigious denomination "Smaragd" refers to the highest quality level in Wachau. This mention reveals the complexity and full-bodied character of these wines from the Wachau, thus suggesting the remarkable ageing capacity of this Riesling Smaragd Ried Singerriedel 2019.

The vintage

The hot and dry summer, typical of the year 2019, without recording temperature records, allowed the vineyard to fully develop. The arrival in autumn of low night temperatures led the grapes to full maturity, and offered ideal harvest conditions. The wines of this vintage are characterised by their elegance, their very particular aromas, as well as their great potential.

Vinification and ageing

The cultivation of the steep vines of Singerriedel requires a very delicate manual work. Thus, the winegrowers strive to meticulously follow the rules of a culture respectful of the biodiversity that characterises the vineyard. The harvest of the riesling is therefore entirely done by hand, several times, in order to select only the berries that meet strict quality criteria. After a few hours of maceration, fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks until the end of the summer.
