The richness and balance of a Second Wine from Saint-Julien

The estate

Classified as a Grand Cru in 1855, the Château Branaire-Ducru is one of the big names in the Saint-Julien appellation. Owned by François-Xavier Maroteaux, the son of the late Patrick Maroteaux, and managed by Jean-Dominique Videau, Château Branaire-Ducru offers, vintage after vintage, a superb expression of this great terroir on the left bank of Bordeaux with wines recognized for their elegance, velvety texture on the palate and their consistency.

The vineyard

The vineyard of Château Branaire-Ducru extends over an area of 60 hectares following an expansion of 10 hectares in 2009. The vines, with an average age of 36 years (although some are a century old), are planted on quaternary gravel-siliceous alluvial soils, recognized as one of the warmest terroirs in the Bordeaux region, allowing late-ripening grape varieties to develop while ensuring perfect phenolic maturation.

A part of the vineyard as well as the young vines are specifically dedicated to the production of the Duluc de Branaire-Ducru cuvée, Second Wine of Château Branaire-Ducru, an essential reference among the great wines of Saint-Julien.

The vintage

A mild and rainy winter promotes early bud break, particularly thanks to mild temperatures at the end of March. Despite three episodes of frost in the spring, the impact on the vineyard remains limited. Flowering, delayed by a cool and wet spring, ends under better conditions. The summer, cool then dry from mid-August, allows slow maturation with grapes balanced in sugars and acidity. In September, showers slow down maturation, but the good weather in October refines the concentration and tannins, especially of the Cabernets. The harvest takes place from September 24 to October 14.
