Opus One 2014 : A Precocious Vintage in Oakville

After a 2013 vintage praised by critics and considered by James Suckling "a point of reference for the great red wines of America," Opus One 2014 was much anticipated. Founded by Baron Philippe de Rothschild (Château Mouton-Rothschild) and Robert Mondavi, a respected oenologist from Napa Valley, Opus One delivers a very tasty wine in the 2014 vintage. The 2014 vintage was exceptionally precocious in the Oakville appellation, which in no way affected the quality of the wine, due to almost perfect conditions during the ripening stage. The grape harvest suggested an ideal balance between freshness and concentration.

The blend of this Opus One 2014 is made up of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Malbec. The nose is floral, reminiscent of freshly cut grass and undergrowth, then developing aromas of red and black fruits. On the palate, we find black fruits, but also black olives and spices. The texture of the wine is silky, with fine tannins, and the mouth presents at the finish a nice tension and touches of mocha. To be tasted now, but can also be kept for a good fifteen years (from the vintage) to achieve greater complexity.
