Description

The concentration and delicacy of a Second Red Wine from Margaux

The property

With origins dating back to the 12th century, the Château Margaux is one of those Grand Crus that have built the legend of the great wines of Bordeaux around the world. The château was awarded the title of Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855 and was the only one of the four châteaux presented to have received a score of twenty out of twenty. With the acquisition of the property by André Mentzelopoulos in 1977, Château Margaux writes a new page in its history. Raising the Grand Vin de Château Margaux to the highest level, he reintroduced the Second Wine of the château, the Pavillon Rouge of Château Margaux, initiated in 1908. Following in her father's footsteps due to his premature death, Corinne Mentzelopoulos took up the family banner with energy and passion to maintain the rank of Château Margaux, which has become a Bordeaux masterpiece, so recognizable by its neo-Palladian style. Vintage after vintage, the wines of the property are among the greatest wines in the world.

The vineyard

The Château Margaux vineyard owes its uniqueness to its rare and unique terroir, located on a gravel mound. The grape variety of the property favors the flagship black grape of the area, the cabernet sauvignon, not forgetting the merlot, the petit verdot, and the cabernet franc. The clay-limestone soils of the estate give birth to legendary wines, with a sleek and sensual style, so representative of the Margaux appellation. This vintage is made up of 41% of the harvest.

The vintage

The 2009 vintage was built under a contrasting climate, marked by a cool spring followed by an exceptionally dry summer, comparable to 2005. The absence of rain from July favored the great terroirs and the cabernet sauvignon, while some vines on light soils had more difficulty reaching perfect maturity. The alternation of hot days and cool nights allowed for a beautiful concentration of tannins and anthocyanins, while preserving the aromatic freshness. All the elements were in place to make 2009 a very great vintage.

Blend

Cabernet sauvignon (67%), merlot (29%), petit verdot (4%).

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Pavillon Rouge 2009

Tasting

The Pavillon Rouge 2009 combines classicism and exceptional tannic power, even surpassing the 2005, while maintaining a remarkable balance thanks to an unprecedented sweetness and delicacy. The high proportion of cabernet sauvignon allows for a moderate alcohol content (13.4) and enhances its elegance. Already charming and delicious, this wine has immense aging potential.
