The Boutari Company was first established in 1879 by Ioannis Boutaris, in the Naoussa winegrowing area of Macedonia, on the eastern foothills of Mount Vermio. It was here that the historic Greek winery first began to promote the then nearly abandoned local Xinomavro red grape variety, from which they produced exceptionally age-worthy and complex wines, bringing international attention to the VQPRD classified Naoussa appellation. Eventually, the company expanded its holdings, acquiring vineyards and wineries in 5 carefully selected terroirs of Greece (Santorini, Peloponissos, Crete, Goumenissa, and Attica) and 1 in the French region of Languedoc. The legacy of Boutari lies not only in its remarkably diverse range of high quality wines, made with indigenous varietals, international grapes and blends from both, but also in the preservation and modernisation of Greek viticulture. Boutari was one of the first wineries to set a high standard for the Greek wines on an international scale. The Boutari portfolio presents an authentic and complete reflection of the many faces of the Greek landscape, from the sun-soaked southeastern slopes of Mount Vermio in Naoussa to the sparsely planted and very windy vineyards of Santorini.
