A fresh Italian wine from Trentino Alto Adige with a beautiful aromatic intensity
The property
Nestled in the heart of the alpine valleys, the Tenuta San Leonardo extends along the banks of the Adige to the south of Trento in Italy. The Alps rise on either side of the vineyards that sit in this powerful and picturesque landscape. Very ancient, the origins of the Tenuta San Leonardo date back to the 11th century. Founded in 1724, Tenuta San Leonardo is owned by the Marchesi Carlo Guerrieri Gonzaga family.
The vineyard
This Trentino Alto Adige estate extends over nearly 300 hectares, 30 of which are vineyards, located at altitudes between 150 and 200 meters. Merlot is planted on gravel-rich terroirs while cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and carmenère are planted on sandier soils, with a neutral pH. The San Leonardo cuvée is made from vines aged 20 to 50 years.
The wine
Iconic cuvée of the estate and a true myth of viticulture in the Dolomites, the San Leonardo cru is the heir to the tradition of the Bordeaux blend applied in Italy since the early 1980s, through a parcel and varietal vinification. This cuvée is made from vines aged 25 to 75 years, planted within the monastery and resting on sandy (cabernet sauvignon, carmenère) and clayey (merlot) soils.
Vinification and aging
Fermentation occurs naturally, with a maceration of 12 to 15 days in small concrete vats, punctuated by daily pump-overs and a few rackings. Once the runoff is complete, malolactic fermentation takes place in these same vats, where the wine is then left to rest for several months to clarify. Aging extends over 24 months, divided between 70% barrels and 30% French oak casks. After blending, the wine is bottled, then aged for at least an additional 24 months in our cellars before being released on the market.
Blend
Cabernet sauvignon, carmenère and merlot.
