Characteristics and tasting advice for Yves Cuilleron's Bassenon 2022
Tasting
Color
This Côte-Rôtie has a deep color with intense purple reflections, typical of the great northern Rhône Valley syrahs.
Nose
The bouquet seduces with its aromatic complexity: ripe red and black fruits intertwine delicately with floral nuances and a subtle spicy touch, bringing elegance and depth.
Palate
The palate is both silky and structured. The tannins, fine and perfectly integrated, support a balanced frame. A beautiful minerality underlines the freshness of the wine, while the persistent finish reveals all the richness of this remarkable terroir.
Food and wine pairings
This Côte-Rôtie pairs with refined dishes based on red meats or tender game. It will enhance a confit leg of lamb or a spiced pigeon. Its finesse also makes it a choice partner for elegant and tasty cuisine.
Service and aging potential
To be tasted between 16 and 18°C. Pleasant from today for the richness of its fruit, this wine will develop more complexity with the years. It can be kept until 2032, or even longer depending on the storage conditions.
A great red wine from the Rhône Valley, a subtle blend of power and elegance
The property
Located in Chavanay, the Yves Cuilleron estate was founded in 1920. Since 1987, Yves Cuilleron, grandson of the founder, has passionately managed this family property which he has transformed into an essential reference of the northern Rhône. The estate now covers 90 hectares spread over six exceptional appellations, including Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. Committed to sustainable viticulture, Yves favors manual harvesting, parcel vinification and a minimalist approach in the cellar, in order to respect the identity of each terroir. His desire to revive the great vineyards of the northern Rhône and his qualitative requirement give his wines an international reputation.
The vineyard
The Bassenon cuvée is born on a 2-hectare vineyard located in Semons, on the south-facing terraced slopes of the Côte-Rôtie appellation. This exceptional terroir rests on a soil of migmatite granite and gneiss, giving the wine a mineral intensity and a unique aromatic expression. This rare geological configuration contributes to the production of very high quality grapes.
Vinification and aging
The harvest is carried out manually, followed by a rigorous sorting. The vinification is carried out in a traditional and parcelled way, with partial destemming. The maceration lasts three weeks in open vats, using exclusively indigenous yeasts and a minimal oenological intervention. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barrels, before the final blending of the different parcels.
Blend
Composed of 90% syrah, which brings depth, structure and fruity intensity, this Côte-Rôtie is completed by 10% viognier. The latter brings a refined floral dimension and contributes to the complexity and balance of the wine.
