Tasting
With a beautiful vivacity, this vintage combines minerality and aromatic richness with a powerful and complex tannic structure.
The refinement and intensity of a vintage champagne
The property
Established for nearly five centuries in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, the Philipponnat Champagne House is one of the historic names of the Champagne region. Singularity, excellence, generosity and simplicity are the values that guide this house which has remained family-oriented. Owned by the house since 1935, the legendary Clos des Goisses is one of the oldest and most prestigious enclosed vineyards in Champagne. This jewel is the origin of rare champagnes with exceptional power.
The vineyard
The Philipponnat Champagne House oversees an exceptional vineyard of 20 hectares in Premiers and Grands Crus in Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Avenay. The Clos des Goisses extends over 5.83 hectares of hillside vines on a 45° slope planted with pinot noir and chardonnay. It takes its name from the old Champagne dialect "gois" meaning a very steep hillside. On pure chalk soils facing due south, the Clos des Goisses is one of the warmest terroirs in Champagne with temperatures 1.5°C higher on average than the rest of the region. Due to its steep slope, the Clos des Goisses vineyard is manually worked with extremely rigorous parcel monitoring, excluding the use of synthetic herbicides and insecticides. The soils are worked with ploughing and hoeing to eliminate weeds.
The wine
Produced in very limited quantities and resulting from a rigorous parcel selection, this Réserve Millésimée L.V. 2002, the initials of which mean "Long Ageing", benefits from extended ageing in the house's cellars and a disgorging in October 2021. Each bottle of this 2002 vintage champagne is a vibrant tribute to time and the constant quest for excellence advocated by the House.
The vintage
Marked by low rainfall and high temperatures, the year 2002 is also distinguished by a temperate summer with constant temperatures that favoured the progressive maturity of the grapes. The alternation in September of warm days and cold nights favoured the maturity and aromatic richness of the berries. The 2002 vintage is considered one of the most promising of this early century.
