The property
With a reputation that has left the Italian Mediterranean coast to make a place on the international stage, the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia establishes itself as one of the greatest names in Italian wine. Founded in 1981, this jewel in the heart of Tuscany is now in the hands of the Frescobaldi family who have given it its nobility. In just a few decades, the exceptional know-how of the house, supported by consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and oenologist Axel Heinz, has established the reputation of these great wines around the world while reinterpreting the finesse of Italian wines in the light of a great terroir.
The wine
Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is a Tuscan wine made from vineyards in Bolgheri.
The vintage
Starting with a late bud break due to a cool and dry spring, the year 2022 is marked by dry conditions causing significant water stress reducing the yields of this vintage. Summer storms restart the maturities before a September with ideal meteorology to refine the maturities.
Vinification and ageing
The grapes, hand-picked in 15 kilo crates, are manually sorted before and after destemming and then lightly pressed. For even more precision, an optical sorting is used since the 2016 vintage. The vinifications are parcel by parcel and carried out by grape variety. After a 15-day alcoholic fermentation partially carried out in stainless steel and concrete tanks, maceration takes place over a period of 10 to 15 days depending on the batches. Malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks then barrelling in oak barrels (25% new, 75% of a wine) for 15 months of ageing. At the end of the 12th month of ageing, the wines are blended and then put back into barrels for three months. Finally, after bottling, the wines rest for another 6 months in the cellar before being put on the market.
