The property
With a reputation that has left the Italian Mediterranean coast to make a place on the international scene, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia establishes itself as one of the greatest names in Italy. Founded in 1981, this jewel in the heart of Tuscany is now in the hands of the Frescobaldi family who has given it its nobility. In just a few decades, the exceptional know-how of the house, supported by consulting winemaker Michel Rolland and winemaker Axel Heinz, has established the reputation of the estate around the world while reinterpreting the finesse of Italian wines in the light of a great terroir.
The vineyard
Tenuta dell'Ornellaia watches over a vineyard that, due to its diversity of exposures, benefits from both a refreshing sea breeze and natural protection against cold winds in winter. Located not far from the hills of Bolgheri, this terroir owes its uniqueness to its mosaic of clay-sandy soils of marine, alluvial and volcanic origin. It is thus within preserved landscapes that the grape varieties entering the blend of these great Bolgheri Superiore wines develop a pure and refined expression.
The vintage
The year 2023 began with a mild winter with high temperatures and average rainfall, followed by a spring marked by abundant rains that constituted important water reserves. The hot summer was punctuated by beneficial rains. The rainfall at the end of August and the cool nights in September favored the development of aromatic complexity and preserved the acidity of the grapes.
Vinification and aging
For Poggio Alle Gazze 2023, the grapes are hand-picked in small 15 kg crates, then immediately cooled upon arrival at the winery. A slow and progressive pressing avoids oxidation, followed by static decanting for 12 hours. Fermentation takes place in barrels (25% new, 25% used), in stainless steel tanks and in concrete tanks, at a temperature not exceeding 22°C. Aging on fine lees lasts 6 months with regular stirring, before the final blend and a slight clarification. The wine then rests for an additional 12 months in bottle before its commercialization.
Blend
Poggio Alle Gazze 2023 is a blend of 53% sauvignon blanc, 37% vermentino, 7% viognier and 3% semillon.
