Description
The freshness and mineral framework of a Marche red wine
The estate
Located between the Marche and Abruzzo regions, Umani Ronchi is now one of Italy's 18 largest wine-producing families. The venture began near Cupramontana, the historic heart of Verdicchio Classico. Founded in the 1950s by Gino Umani Ronchi, the estate initially took the form of a small, picturesque farmhouse. But in the 1970s, Massimo Bernetti took over the estate and gave it a new dimension. As well as increasing the size of the vineyard, which gradually grew to over 210 hectares, Massimo Bernetti was also quick to take his wines abroad. Today, this Italian jewel thrives under the watchful eye of Massimo's son, Michele Bernetti, who continues to make his legacy shine, with deep respect for his terroir and the people around him.
The vineyard
Pelago from Umani Ronchi stems from Marche in Italy, in the heart of a vineyard nestling in Osimo. Facing south-west, at nearly 150 metres of altitude, the vines flourish on a deep soil dating back to the Plio-Pleistocene era, rich in clay, silt and limestone.
The wine
The name of this cuvée derives from the ancient Greek word "pelagos," which refers to the sea. This name reflects the marine character typically found at the heart of these wines, produced close to the coast. A true Italian jewel, Pelago was inspired by the father of Italian oenology, Giacomo Tachis, known for creating such legends as Sassicaia, Solaia and San Leonardo. The 2019 Pelago embodies the perfect marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano, the king of the Marche grape varieties, promising a style as complex as it is unique. Produced only in the best years, the 2019 Pelago reveals structure, richness and character.
The vintage
The vintage was marked by a mild, dry winter, followed by a cool, rainy spring. These conditions enabled the vines to replenish their water reserves, which were essential for coping with the summer drought. Despite a hot summer, the rain ensured regular grape growth.
Winemaking and ageing
Once the grapes were destemmed, they were lightly pressed and then placed in stainless steel vats for a 15-day fermentation. The wine was then aged in oak barrels for 14 months. After bottling, the wine was aged for a further 12 months.
