Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for Yarra Yering's Dry Red N°1 2018

Tasting

This wine is characterised by a rich structure of black fruits, enhanced by a subtle note of sage that brings a touch of elegance. Its vibrant freshness, supported by sharp acidity and firm tannins, gives it a remarkable ageing potential.

A great Australian wine from an exceptional terroir

The estate

Founded in 1969, Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in the Yarra Valley, in the state of Victoria. Voted "Winery of the Year 2024" by The Real Review, a reference in Australian wine criticism, this estate is an unmissable icon. Under the direction of Sarah Crowe, voted several times as Australia's best winemaker, and Andrew George, recognised as the country's best vineyard manager, Yarra Yering offers cuvées acclaimed by enthusiasts worldwide.

The vineyard

The Yarra Valley vineyard, located in the state of Victoria in Australia, is one of the country's most prestigious wine regions. Known for its cool climate, this region mainly produces elegant wines.

The cuvée

The first vines planted in Yarra Yering's block n° 1 were cabernet, thus giving the estate its name. Malbec was also part of the initial plantings in 1969. A few rows of merlot mingle with the cabernet, while additional plots were planted in 1990 on newly acquired neighbouring lands. Today, petit verdot is exclusively grown on the hillsides of these new territories.

Vinification and ageing

Harvested by hand and carefully sorted, only the best berries are selected. Fermentation takes place in vats with manual punching down twice a day, a portion of the cabernet remaining longer on the skins for added complexity. The batches are then aged separately in French oak barrels (40% new) for 15 months, and then blended just before bottling.

Blend

Cabernet sauvignon (55%)
Merlot (28%)
Malbec (12%)
Petit verdot (5%)
